Chanukah is not a Jewish Christmas. In fact it predates the birth of Jesus. It is an eight day celebration also called the festival of lights. It commemorates the defeat of the Greeks by a small Jewish army. The eight lights on the menorah(pictured above) commemorate the miracle of the lights. After the Greeks were defeated the temple was cleansed and rededicated and the eternal flame relit. There was only one flask of sacred oil. This was only enough to last one day. But by the grace of the Lord Almighty it lasted eight days. So Why don't Christians celebrate Chanukah? I don't know. It may be anti-semitism. After all we Christians believe it was the same Lord that made the lights of Chanukah shine that sent the light of Christ. You should be hearing "Carol of the Bells." |
Kwanzaa is an African-American cultural festival observed December 26 to January 1. "Kwanzaa" means "first fruits." The celebration focuses on seven priciples: Unity(Umojo), Self-determination(Kujichagulia), Collective work and responsibility(Ujima), Cooperative economics(Ujamaa), Purpose(Nia), Creativity(Kuumba), and Faith(Imani). This holiday can be celebrated in such a way that the biblical aspects of these principles are emphasized. One way is to light the Christ Candle at the beginning of the celebration to place it in a Christian perspective.
